T-Mobile and Sprint to file formal merger application with FCC next week

T-Mobile and Sprint are getting ready to take the next step in their effort to merge.

The two companies have told the FCC that they plan to formally file an application asking for approval to merge. The application will be filed on Monday, June 18th, and will include a protective order to block sensitive corporate information from the public.

While T-Mobile and Sprint agreed to a merger deal in April, the two companies must get regulatory approval before they’re actually allowed to merge. This includes getting the green light from the FCC.

T-Mo and Sprint have claimed that the merger will help to create a 5G network that’s better than either company could create on its own and that it’ll be good for U.S. job growth, too. The deal does have its opponents, including some that argue that the merger could be harmful for the prepaid market unless T-Mobile and Sprint shed one or more of their prepaid brands.

T-Mobile and Sprint have said that they expect their merger to close no later than the first half of 2019.
