It’s official: Android M is Marshmallow!

Google announced on the Android Developers Blog that Android M’s official name will be “Marshmallow,” continuing the company’s tradition of naming major Android OS updates after desserts. Google also revealed that Marshmallow is Android 6.0, which is up from the last version of Lollipop, Android 5.1. You can see the official Marshmallow statue on Google’s campus right here.

In addition to revealing Android 6.0 Marshmallow, Google today released the final Android 6.0 SDK for developers and OEMs to base their apps and software updates on.

For us regular folk, Google has also released the third and final Android M Developer Preview. If you’ve got a Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9, or Nexus Player, the final Android M preview will be rolled out to your device over the air during the next couple of days. If you’d rather not wait, you can manually flash the system image right now.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow is slated to begin rolling out to the public this fall with new features like native fingerprint reader support, Android Pay, battery saving features, and native USB Type-C support. When the rollout begins, Google’s Nexus hardware will likely be among the first devices to get Marshmallow, followed by device makers like Motorola, HTC, LG, and Samsung.
