Earlier this year at its own special event, Microsoft showed off what was coming next for Windows Phone, alongside some new devices (Lumia 635 and 930). Perhaps its biggest announcement was Windows Phone 8.1, a new version of its mobile OS which included many much-needed features. It didn’t give us a specific release date for the software, but Nokia announced today that it’s rolling out!
“Ready for some great news? Starting today, the Lumia Windows Phone 8 smartphone family will receive the Lumia Cyan software, the new Windows Phone 8.1 update and Lumia features upgrade that will make your Lumia an even more personal, fun and indispensable part of your life.”
As we already know, the T-Mobile Lumia 810 is being left out in the cold, but the Lumia 521 and Lumia 925 are both listed as “under testing” which means they could conceivably start getting updates from today. If you check for updates through your settings menu, you could well find a new version of software waiting for you.
The update includes Action Center (think Android-like drop-down menu), customizable Live Tiles, Cortana (the awesome digital assistant) and the “flow” keyboard.
Be sure to let us know if you get the update installed. It’s also worth noting that you can check on the progress of every device’s update on Nokia’s site. A report just published on WP Central suggests that Lumia 925 users are already getting the new software. So finger’s crossed, it could be hitting your phone soon.
